Justin Edinburgh, had things panned out differently, might have been Pompey manager now – they didn’t, so he isn’t, but we’ll face him in pre-season as a friendly anyway at Gillingham has been confirmed.

When manager of Newport back along he was ‘strongly linked’ with a Fratton return but stayed with the Welsh side until last season when he became Gillingham manager in February with his new side hosting us at the start of August.

Saturday 1st August, 3pm the kick-off time, is the date we’re off to Priestfield.

Pre-season is pre-season, it doesn’t really count for much or mean much even but, with all due respect, it’ll be a test against a good quality side are several levels higher than the likes of Havant and Bognor Regis that have already been announced with a ‘Pompey XI’ taking on Burnham too.

As it happens this will be the first meeting in pushing on for a decade! I remember, kind of, our 3-2 league cup defeat against them in the league cup in 2005…I say ‘remember’ although by that I mean I remember being away in Newquay with some friends and having to wait for the result of this until the following day when it was read about in the paper!
