Formations Formations Formations

I’ve been known to ramble on about formations now and again and being an advocate of ‘total football’ I sometimes get frustrated when certain players cannot adapt to certain positions or situations during a game. Rug on the other hand is more a square pegs square holes type of man. And this has it’s place if you can afford to carry o squad of about thirty player ….

Everybody has there opinion and Rug and I rarely see eye to eye in terms of line ups or formation …. but for the fist time this season after the Stevenage game we found ourselves agreeing on a formation….although not necessarily the starting line up !!

The formation we agreed on was 3-5-2 ..why .. well here is my take ..

For me the bottom line is that we do not have a decent feedback in the club … Guy has deemed Butler not ready … Moutaouakil is a liability as is Devera at left back .. it just doesn’t work .. My personal opinion is that our best full backs are our two utility men East and Cooper .. but what we fail to realise is that we have three centre halves who can all play a bit and can all hold down a place in the team when at the top of their game

In midfield a problem we have had all season is how to accommodate Barcham and Holmes as well as Wallace… Well to me it is easy .. you use both on the wings and play Jed Wallace just off the front two with two holding midfielder (Racon, Ertl, maybe Ferry) protecting the back three.

Up front we have many to pick from but ultimately I think it will be Jervis and Agyemang who will be our key pairing with DC, Bird and Craddock (maybe) ..

Is it me or does that seem too simple.

If we come up against a long ball side we have three big centre halves to clear the ball … If we come up against a ball playing 4-4-2 side we have enough in the middle to break things up and still have three midfield outlets…. If we come up against a 4-3-3 formation Barcham and Holmes could tuck in and dominate the middle preventing al service to a front three.

As much as I have to realise we don’t have the players to play total football and as much as I have a nag at rug that square pegs in square holes is limited .. I think the thing we need know is a formation that allows our ‘best’ players to play their game …. 3-5-2 allows that.

What are you thoughts .. ??
