The curtain came down on the 2017-18 season in positive fashion on Saturday as Pompey saw off Peterborough, which meant the Blues finished in a respectable 8th place in League One.
20 wins isn’t a bad return, only the clubs that finished above us managed more. The 20 defeats were what prevented us from making it into the top-six. Six clubs lost more than Pompey; three of these sides were relegated. Had we turned some of these into draws it could’ve been different. However, as I say, it was a decent return to this level.
Yes, certain areas need improvement during the summer, but there are reasons to be optimistic, which I am about our future.
Brett Pitman’s double saw him end on a high, personally. There’s little doubt the captain should have scored his first Pompey treble, at least, but he still had a fine season. Hopefully, we’ll get more of the same next term, others upping their game too.
So, Pitman’s first half brace was enough for the points in a convincing victory over Peterborough, who didn’t really pose much of a threat as the fans at a sun-baked Fratton Park witnessed arguably our best performance of the season? Certainly, the opening 45-minutes were very good as the players, some potentially for the last time, signed off in style.
It’ll be interesting to see what the summer brings for Pompey. Firstly regarding the players Kenny Jackett attempts to keep and those who decide their futures will be elsewhere, assuming the boss doesn’t make this decision for them? Jackett’s recruitment will then be crucial.
On a personal note, I’d hoped to end my own involvement for a while positively. I can say I left Portsmouth and returned to Devon content, knowing I had been in the company of good people, enjoyed a cracking day in the sun and witnessed a decent performance, which obviously resulted in a win. What more could I have asked for?
