Highly rated 17 year old winger Neil Ayrton signed for 4th Division Portsmouth from Alliance Premier League Club Maidstone United in December 1979 but had to wait until Pompey had gained promotion to the 3rd Division before making his debut (replacing Terry Brisley) in a 2-0 defeat v Brentford at Fratton Park the following September.

Opportunities with high flying Pompey were few and far between and over six months passed before a one match absence by Alan Rogers allowed manager Frank Burrows to provide Ayrton with his full debut as Pompey drew 1-1 with Oxford United in a sodden Sunday afternoon fixture at Fratton Park.

As it transpired that match accounted for Ayrton’s one and only start as a Pompey player and his substitution during the game (replaced by Jeff Hemmerman) also marked the end of his brief spell as a professional footballer, as having struggled to make the grade he was released at the end of the season and returned to Maidstone United.

Having retired from non-league football Ayrton converted to Athletics where he is now an established veteran runner with Blackheath & Bromley Harriers Athletic Club

  • Well I have to admit this one nearly had me beaten fellas. The fact that Maidstone United reformed and I can not find any relevant accurate stats relating to the ‘old’ team made this a really tough one to research. Still I managed to get something post Pompey even if I had to resort to the tracking down the AAA.. Does anybody remember him .. I don’t and I was at the games when he played .. apparently !

  • I too was there and he has left an indelible blank on my memory. And I think I would have remembered if Jeff Hemmerman was on the bench.

  • I remember him and saw both of his games. Overshadowed by Alan Rogers sadly and never made it. Well done Chixy.

  • Guess what Chix – It’s another player I have never heard of. Guessing by your reactions though, not many people have! lol

  • New one on me but I actually remember teh game with Brentford when we lost 2-0 back in 1980. Sad really why I should but I do.

  • another fine read chixy, helped me learn something more about someone that i knew little about!

  • Thanks as always for your comments fellas I promise to do a more ‘well known’ player in the next few weeks … Well once the season has finished and I’ve had my holiday… but I reckon I’m gonna try and pick up the gaunlett of Paul Sugrue next week … Just for Paultsmouth
