Down to the Wire

An article from jsander48, as the title says it is ‘down to the wire’ for Pompey – read on for more.

The word “administration” is so often associated with Pompey in the recent years, but the off-pitch problems aren’t the only thing concerning the loyal fans at Fratton Park. Last week saw Pompey head into their 7th game in March this time facing Hull. Written off in all aspects of the match Pompey roped in two loanees from City who hoped to keep the Fratton Faithful silencing their opponents in the Milton End. Much to even my surprise, after seeing Pompey’s survival chances almost paper-thin, Pompey actually won in a dominant game. Shutting out a playoff contender is now a rarity aside from Pompey’s 4-1 thrashing of Brum.

Now, we could say that every game at this point is a “must-win”. Despite the tough string of games ahead, this Saturday’s is no different Burnley will be no piece of cake with their top scorer, Jay Rodriguez is back in the line-up after a 3-game groin injury. Burnley, also having one of the best away records in the league, pretty much see nothing more to play for, with promotion out of sight and relegation only the ultimate pessimist’s thoughts, but it doesn’t mean they’ll take it as a walk in the park.

A loss could be costly for Pompey who hope to get away with at least a point for almost every game of the season and find it necessary to find the back of the net despite netting 6 goals in their last 3 games. A tie wouldn’t be much better either, it would mean that Pompey would have to pull-off another unlikely upset against a team in the top-half of the table. A win doesn’t seem that far out of sight though optimistically, with an encouraging fact that Burnley are winless in 7.

Not only will we be watching Pompey this weekend but we will have to be keeping an eye out for Coventry, Forest and Bristol City (Donny lost on Friday) scores all which we need to lose.

Only adding to the pressure Appy will be faced with a hard task as to whether he shall prefer Rocha over Rekik. With the long season rapidly dwindling to its last games, this could be the game that decides it all….it has all come “Down to the Wire”!
