Speaking for the first time after completing his free transfer move to Pompey on Wednesday afternoon, Sylvain Distin told the Pompey website that he signed for Pompey because he would like to help us push on for European football.

‘My ambition is to push for Europe, that is why I am here,’ he stated confidently. ‘I don’t know whether we will succeed or not but we will definitely try.

‘I have been in touch with Portsmouth for a long time. The side did well last season and they are going in the right direction. Harry Redknapp was also a big influence in me coming here.

‘It was tough to leave Man City, I was there for five years and I’ve got friends and family over there but I felt the time was right to leave. I didn’t speak to (former team-mate) David James about coming here; I don’t like to talk to anyone because it is my decision. Once I made the decision to come here, that was it – it was final.

‘There were other clubs interested, when you are available on a free transfer everyone enquires about you but you soon learn who really wants you.’

We really missed a trick by not making it into next seasons Uefa Cup – but we do not look back with regret, as it was a fine season. But we will have to go some to make it via the league next season but more signings like Distin – in particular at least one 20 goal a season striker, add this to Sulley Muntari’s pending arrival and our squad is looking as though it could seriously compete for such a place.

PLAY UP POMPEY!
