Ok, the likelihood that we were actually going to pay a transfer fee, no matter how ‘minimal’ it was, for anyone last summer was slim, but did we miss a trick in not making more of an effort for Tyrone Mears?

Obviously NO ONE could ‘replace’ Glen Johnson, they could merely look to help ‘fill a void’ created by his big money move to Liverpool – and Mears was one of those names ‘mentioned’.

In all honesty I ‘scoffed’ at the suggestion, but with Burnley paying something like £500,000 for him this looks like money VERY WELL spent as the guy is doing a good job – such a good job in fact that there is even some talk about an ‘outside chance’ of England recognition as Johnson’s understudy!

From what I have seen of him he looks a decent player going forward and can also defend, some would argue that he is actually a better defender than Johnson as ‘defending’ is his main priority, although he does get forward well.

We are struggling with both our full back areas – Steve Finnan is a good right back, and if he could stay fit enough for long enough would be a very good signing for us. Anthony Vanden Borre does not convince me as a right back, then again nor does Tal Ben-Haim – but he is a better right back than left back.

Although I guess it is not worth thinking about ‘what might have been’, we have to think about what is. Even so we will get to have a look at him in the flesh this weekend, and – from an England point of view as much as anything – I am actually looking forward to this, although I hope he has an off day of course!
