It was a long, long day, mostly in the cold, the wind and the rain, with several things that were not ‘ideal’ along the way but the main things was the we won again – this made everything else more than worth it!

Several months ago I was invited to go to the Villa v Pompey game at Villa Park as a guest of my Villa supporting friend. Sitting in one of the Villa ends was far from ideal, but watching Pompey in any game is something that I will do, despite some sacrifices that may have to be made.

It meant getting up at stupid o’clock, one of my oldest friends Fry came home for the weekend so he could be another guest at the game – he turned up at my place at 7, and we set off in the terrible conditions.

Good time was made and almost at the house of this Villa supporter, we took a slight wrong turn. We carried going for a while until we got to a road that looked to be sending us god only knows where, one of those roads that you see in films that leads you to a family of monsters that feed on passing by ‘lost travellers’… clearly I watch too many horror films! Needless to say we turned round at the first turning we could, this is when we seemed to catch some sort of ditch – which would come back to haunt us – as we got back on the right track and arrived at our destination.

The 3 of us then set off to Villa Park – it was cold and wet, but it was Pompey I was going to see. Our seats, as mentioned in with the Villa fans were on the front row right behind the Villa dugout – this, as I found out when I eventually got home and watched it got me and Fry seen on match of the day!

Sitting in with the Villa fans was ‘difficult’ to say the least, I was unable to celebrate outwardly when we scored goals no.1, 2 or 3 or show much emotion at anything in between, but inwardly I was loving it and lapping it in! When Villa scored I ‘clapped’ but could not bring myself to standing up and doing so.

So the game finished, I was delighted, back we went then Fry and myself soon set off home back to my base – just outside of Plymouth.

Good time was being made when suddenly we could hear a strange noise, so we had to pull off onto a lay-by on the motorway not far out from Exeter – that previously mentioned ditch at our wrong turn must have caused a puncture. Trying to undo the bolts on the tire to change it I did my back in, Fry could not budge them either so we had to wait for a recovery vehicle to come and sort it for us – a touch embarrassing really that two grown men could not get this tire off, but whoever put them on must have been pretty strong, or we were pretty weak!

Eventually just before 9 we managed to get home, some 5 hours after we had left Birmingham, and 14 hours after we had left!

It had been a long, cold, wet and windy day with a few downs along the way but the fact that Pompey won 3-1 made all this forgotten and I did not care, although depending on how long the back is playing up for this time I might…

Ideally I would have wanted my first visit to Villa Park – what a ground this is, huge stadium and fantastic playing surface – to have been in with the Pompey fans, but the hospitality that I was shown by my Villa host was fantastic and made the day very enjoyable. Martin O’Neill is worth the admission fee alone, the fella was so animated, thanks to him I got myself seen on match of the day! An added bonus Platoon was also on last night, still one of my all time favourite films – so a cracking end to another fantastic day.

6 away wins in a row, how great things are at the moment, having been to the last couple of Pompey games back to back I just want to keep going, if only I could afford it…
