Despite openly admitting a striker or strikers are his main objective a midfield player of Alou Diarra’s quality remains very much in Harry Redknapp’s thoughts. He has once again confirmed an interest in The News but remains unsure if Pompey could actually sign him.

‘Alou Diarra’s a good player.

‘I don’t know if you would be able to get him out of Lyon, but I like him.

‘I’m looking to get a couple of front men and a midfielder.

‘Forwards are the priority, because you’ve got to get it right up front. But they’re so hard to find.

‘I’ll go for a midfield player too if I can get the right one. There’s nothing imminent on Diarra, though.’

The 25-year old French international – who played a part in the French world cup side that finished runners up last summer – is looking increasingly like leaving French champions Lyon, but can Redknapp persuade him to join Pompey? There is a simple answer to this – have a go and see what happens!

If we can sign him he will be a very welcome addition – despite a heavily populated midfield as it is – as he would not only be an improvement to the squad, but also an improvement to the starting line up.

There would however be consequences and such an arrival would be likely to cast doubts over current members of our midfield – with Sean Davis and Richard Hughes most likely to be the casualties.

PLAY UP POMPEY!
