Pompey have dismissed any lingering thoughts that Jermain Defoe has still not signed a permanent contract.

We all thought that Defoe had been signed permanently in the first place, as he was unveiled as such… then we found it out was a loan with a promise to buy… still some doubts lingered in peoples minds but Pompey spokesman Gary Double has told The News that a £7.5m 4 and a half year contract has been signed: ‘it was originally a loan deal which would become permanent. There was never any question that wasn’t going to be the case.

‘The deal is in no way connected to Benjani’s move other than it providing the finance to do it.

‘It’s common knowledge we wouldn’t have done the Defoe deal unless we sold Benjani.

‘Jermain signed permanently last week and we’re delighted about that’.

There was some talk that Mark Mudie was going to see the contract that Defoe had signed, as Peter Storrie had apparently phoned the quay to say that this could be arranged? I do not know if this did happen, as I have not listened to the football hours for a good few days.

We have had so many ‘surprises’ with Pompey over the years, but this one finally appears to have been put to bed…
