As I had predicted earlier today – eastneydave can vouch for this, as I think he saw the comment? – Jermain Defoe has received an England call up.

He had originally been omitted from the 30 man squad, but after injuries to Emile Heskey yesterday and Gabriel Agbonlahor today after an impressive debut Defoe has this evening got the call from Fabio Capello to meet up with the squad ahead of the friendly with Switzerland this week.

It is a thought that his non-selection for this 30 man squad in the first place might have been ‘the straw that broke the camels back’ and convinced him to leave Spurs in the first place?

Sadly Glen Johnson was yesterday cut from the 30 man squad and did not make it into the final 23.

The ‘trimming’ of the squad is something that some people are questioning. The argument is that this could have a negative effect on the players cut, and maybe he should have just chosen a squad as normal, but on the other hand another argument is that even the ones cut know that they are well and truly in Capello’s thoughts…
