Change It Harry!
I fully recommend that Harry Redknapp changes the formation that Portsmouth play at home. Ok so the strikers are by no means firing on all cylinders, but how many chances have they had?
Charlton and Middlesborough came to Fratton Park and played five across the middle. This prevented Portsmouth playing passing football and we resulted to long ball tactics.
Long Ball
It doesn`t work for us! Charlton, Bolton, Middlesborough and Tottenham all forced us to play direct football and we didn`t win any of them. Why doesn`t it work? Well Kanu isn`t the best at heading, Andy Cole never jumps, Benjani doesn`t look at the ball if it`s in the air and Lua Lua can`t direct headers to team mates.
I`m not having a go at the team because a lot of the time they are forced to play long balls. We are doing it more of late though, probably due to the current lack of confidence within the side.
We always play 4-4-2 and teams have worked out how to beat us. All they do is get men behind the ball and pressure our midfielders. The defence then can`t pass it into our midfielders so result in “hoofing” it long, to attackers that can`t head the ball.
What Should we do?
I`m open to ideas. I don`t think it matters as long as we change, don`t fix what isn`t broke, we`ll it is broke! Maybe play three up-front but I think that will just encourage more long balls and one less midfielder to pass to.
If I was Harry
I would play David James in goal
Back three of Sol Campbell, Linvoy Primus and Noe Pamarot
Wing backs Matt Taylor (left), Lauren (right)
Three two Midfielders Pedro Mendes and Sean Davis
Attacking midfielder Niko Kranjcar or Gary O`Neil just behind strikers
Up-Front I would play Benjani and Lua Lua
????????????????????..
I would drop Glen Johnson, I don`t think he`s been playing well enough. I also think that Gary O`Neil doesn`t play well in the middle with Mendes, requiring one or the other to play (in this formation). This formation would enable Pompey to pass the ball through midfield. This could also be adapted should Pompey take the lead- Kranjcar can go to left midfield and Lua Lua can go to the right. I know that Kranjcar hasn`t been performing to his full ability; he is however, our most creative player and that is what we are missing.
People say we need a goal scorer (I agree) but I think we lack a creative midfielder more. Something that Niko does for Croatia but not for Pompey.
We do need to change it- we are third from bottom in the form table at the moment and have scored two goals in five games.
This is just my opinion and the wonderful thing about Football is everyone has an opinion and I want to hear yours?
