Sol Campbell had been very outspoken about the transfers we had made – or as he saw it at the time had not made – and this got him a rap across the knuckles… We then went out and signed Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe, signings that he is very, very happy with.

He could not praise the signings of this pair enough, but his thoughts on our ‘European destiny’ appealed to me more than anything – with him basically saying ‘it is on our own hands’, which in many ways it is: ‘there are a lot of teams around there. It’s quite congested from fourth to 10th place. It’s unbelievable really.

‘We’ve got it in our own hands.

‘We’ve got all the teams in and around us. The main thing is to keep on winning and.

‘I think the main thing is we have got to do it ourselves and get it right on the pitch.

‘We have six home games now and our away form isn’t bad so hopefully we can get a good run at it’.

We are currently behind Everton, Liverpool – who are still battling it out for a place in Europe, most feel they will eventually shine through to take that final champions league place but I am not so sure they will, and if all the other teams – including us – kick on it is not beyond comprehension that they could miss out altogether, although this is unlikely – and Villa, with City, Blackburn and West Ham very much in the hunt, but with us having to play all of these sides – apart from Liverpool – it is to a degree very much in our own hands.

We have Everton this weekend, Villa in a couple of weekends time, then West Ham, City and Blackburn in April, if we won all 5 that is 15 points that would most probably guarantee us European football!

Ok, we might not do this – avoiding defeat is essential though, and we can only play against what we are up against, clearly these teams will not let us play, but then again we will not be letting them play, but if we approach these games in a positive mindset this well and truly leaves things in our own hands…

It is going to be a battle between now and May 11th, and it could very well go down to the wire with it possible we enter the final round of games with a champions league and the uefa cup places still up for grabs, but if we keep doing our part, therefore keeping it in our own hands then we really do have a great chances of achieving something very special this season.

For any of this to happen we need to kick into gear and show our best football again, which in all honesty we have not shown for a long time, we cannot escape from that fact – but even so we are still on a decent run of league and cup form!

We have ground out results recently, which is often the sign of a good team but we cannot keep doing this – and to be honest nor do I want to keep seeing this, as I want to be entertained again – it is time to put our foot down again and finish the season like the spell we had between early September and mid November, and we are capable, we have the players to do this so it is time for them to step up to the plate and deliver again!

If they do deliver, a run like we had earlier in the season is possible, and then as Campbell said ‘you never know how far we can go’…
