Can we say Kyle Bennett is Jed Wallace’s replacement, following his departure to Wolves? Maybe, maybe not but one thing that’s certain is the Doncaster winger’s joined Pompey to become Paul Cook’s first signing.

His signing on a 2-year contract, on a free as he’s turned down a new Donny deal, was confirmed on the Pompey Site shortly after the departure of Wallace.

Dropping into league two wasn’t an issue for him:

‘This is a massive club with a great fan base and the manager expressed a desire to bring me here.

‘I know he’s very attack-minded – which is good for players like me – so that also helped me make this decision.

‘I’ve had a few other offers from the league above, but I certainly don’t see this as a backward step.

‘This club are looking to go somewhere and I want to be a part of that. I know what it takes to win promotion from this division because I’ve done it before.’

Like any player that we’ve signed he’s spoken highly of the Fratton faithful with him looking forward to playing in front of ‘a large crowd’ with him keen to ‘entertain’ us:

‘I’ll give my all in every game, but I also want to entertain. I’m looking forward to the new season and I hope the fans are looking forward to seeing me in action.’

Ironically enough, if this is irony, Bennett started his career with Wolves, where Wallace has just gone…

Obviously words are easy, actions are when it counts, but I’m liking what he’s saying and like the fact that Cook wants to play ‘attacking football’ that should be ‘entertaining’ to watch with the winger keen to be a big part of this.
