Beg the Rich to buy Begovic?

Some thoughts of frustration, and rightly so, from frattonchorus on the latest developments of transfer farce from Pompey.

Yesterday a dissertation had to take the back foot. A 70 page document was released that shed a tiny bit more light on the inner workings of our beloved football club. Reading was less intriguing, more frustrating as we saw image rights to the likes of Lauren and Utaka owed on top of extortionate fees to agents. Then came the £1m owed to Spurs as a ‘sell on fee’ for our young Goalkeeping protégé, Asmir Begovic.

This morning Spurs have cleared this up; they negotiated a set price for Kaboul and Begovic and paid upfront. When the Begovic deal fell through, the valuation of Begovic was to be returned to Spurs. Simple. Then the reality hits you. We shouldn’t be wondering why we owe Spurs £1m for a player they never signed, we should be asking ourselves what sort of negotiator valued him at only £1m?! I guess cash really is King.

A club such as ours, in financial dire straits, was criticised by many a media outlet and fan when we sold Begovic to Stoke for the modest £3.5m. Pulis praised his Chief Exec for negotiating such a deal. £3.5m for a young, internationally capped, Premier League goalkeeper was a bargain. When Peter Storrie spoke to The Quay that night, he spoke of how he could of put a better deal together in the sale for both players, and boy was he right. My Nan could have come up with something better! For Asmir Begovic, the ‘future’ of Pompey at one point, was not even sold for £3.5m, as with our fee to Spurs this will amount to a measly £2.5m. Barely enough to cover the loss we made on Williamson from Watford.

From now on, Storrie, Al Fahim, Azougy and Jacobs should only ever say two words when the press ask for their side of the story. Save us the excuses and give them either “No Comment” or “I’m Sorry”.
