Reports in today’s Mirror claim that the left back situation Harry Redknapp is looking to strengthen will be strengthened by the signing of trialist Celestine Babayaro

He had been on trial with us earlier in pre-season, but this was cut short when he was hospitalised with malaria. Now recovered from this he took part in our Nigerian tour over the weekend and the suggestion is that he will now sign a 1-year contract.

‘If’ this happens then I would be surprised if we saw the arrival of Nicky Shorey, as had been heavily speculated over the summer.

Babayaro is a decent footballer, and an experienced one at that, but I am not sure if I am convinced by him to be honest. I keep asking myself the questions, is he really an improvement – other than increasing the numbers – and why did LA Galaxy release him after only 45 minutes of football?

That said how often to we get the best out of players that are ‘written off’…
