One victory does not mean the end of a ‘sticky patch’ but hopefully the win over Reading has brought an end to our recent bad form? This bad form has seen us slip away slightly after such a promising start.

We started so well last season, but a second half blip saw us miss out on Europe, but as Harry Redknapp has told The News he is eager for us not to repeat this again this season and has Europe in his sights: ‘I would obviously like to get into Europe with Portsmouth this year, that would be a terrific achievement.

‘I would settle for sixth spot, for sure. I think it’s going to be tight.

‘It will be tough but if we could do that it would be lovely.

‘We went through a dicky spell in a similar position last year. But are stronger this year, we are a better team in all honesty.

‘It would be lovely if we could seal it. If we don’t it’s still the best times Portsmouth have had for 50 years’.

This is good to hear from Redknapp, and makes a change from a lot of his recent ‘we’re only Portsmouth’ comments and so on, I like hearing this, long may it continue. He is right, we are a year better, much stronger and a much better side.

Our away form is currently the best in the country – which is quite bizarre given our appalling away form down the years – so if we can retain this throughout the season and also overcome whatever demons are holding us back at home despite the upcoming African nations we are going to have a fantastic chance of making it into Europe for the first time.

This is a hope, in fact a dream that we all have but it is something that we are thinking could be a realistic one. For now my aims remain just to match – at least – what we achieved last season, but ideally better that. If we are still there or thereabouts in a couple of months time then thoughts really will be turning 100% towards the promised lands of Europe…
