…And That Is Why We Need A Squad!

An article from Pompey Malta on just why we ‘need a squad’ and not just ‘a team’ – read on for more.

There is a difference between a squad and a team. What Pompey have at the moment is a team. But aren’t football clubs meant to have football squads? Perhaps, but not always!

After being eliminated from the League Cup by a league 2 team called Barnet, albeit having a very good manager in Sanchez, Pompey’s frailties were all over an empty Fratton Park.

Once again, Steve Cotterill couldn’t fill the substitutes bench, and one has to question why the young ones who were given playing time during pre-season were not even sitting down there. This suggests, that like last season, Cotterill wasted a golden opportunity to help the team gel in pre-season, by giving playing time to youngsters he probably never thought of giving them a substitute’s role. Why play them in pre-season and then move them aside?

The problems with having such a light team were evident against Barnet. Steve Cotterill had to tinker his 11 time and time again to make something work. The bench was empty, and he had no one who could come on and change the game. For instance, Mokoena played in 3 different roles in 90 minutes.

A lack of numbers will force the manager to use the same players over and over again, giving other managers the chance to learn our game inside out. How on earth Barnet could beat Pompey is beyond me, but it just happened, and it could have been worse! Barnet’s match is definitely why we need a squad! And fast.
