Tony Adams finally managed to pick up his first win at Fratton as Pompey manager after our 3-2 win over Blackburn, but not before we looked like we might have thrown it away – again! This is what he told sky sports news, with my own thoughts also interspersed:

Adams on not seeing the win coming
‘It feels great to get the win but I didn’t think it was coming and maybe it was not 100 per cent deserved.’

At 2-0 up I must admit that I could only see one winner, telling my brother ‘we should see this through now as Blackburn are no Milan’, who actually said to me ‘we need a third’… At 2-1 I was worried – even more so the deeper we dropped, and the equaliser was only a matter of time in coming… At 2-2 I must admit, like Adams, I thought that was that, if anything Blackburn would actually go on and win!

Adams on not playing well
‘I feel we didn’t play well and Blackburn did play well. Maybe it was because of the AC Milan game on Thursday I’m not sure.

‘Maybe it was important for us that they scored early so it gave us time to get back into the game.’

Maybe this is me being biased, but I think that Adams is doing us an injustice here. Maybe not for the entirety, but then again who does for 90 minutes, but for large spells I thought we did play well – that’s not to say that Blackburn did not.

I think it may well be as he said, the Milan showing was so good so it was hard to live up to that.

Adams on the ‘positives’
‘We have got to work on the positives. For 15 minutes in the second half we were exceptional where we scored two goals.

‘It’s taken us five games to be a bit more professional and today we saw Jermain Defoe run the ball into the corner but credit to the guys.’

The biggest positive of all is of course the win, but I would like to think that psychologically a positive that we need to look at is the fact that we ‘might’ have finally learned that we can kill off a game when we are ahead. We threw away a two-goal lead – again – but finally managed to react to this, although in fairness we did not have a chance in other games as we allowed the opponents back into them so late!

We did get a positive response to the Milan game, which I felt would be the case. Maybe it was made harder than it might have been but we ‘should’ now push on, with that giving us the impetus to do so, coupled with his crucial 3pts…

Adams on our unbeaten run
‘We have had a bit of luck today but you can’t always keep going that way, you do have to focus on other things.

‘But that’s five games unbeaten for us now and I’m proud of them.’

Yep, we did have some luck, but then again we have not exactly had a great deal of that under his management really have we? We got the job done, eventually, and can hopefully keep this going…
